Township of Stirling-Rawdon Declares Significant Weather Event

The Township of Stirling-Rawdon is advising residents that, the Township of Stirling-Rawdon is declaring a Significant Weather Event due to freezing rain that is expected to begin this afternoon and continue overnight. The freezing rain may briefly change over to rain Monday morning as temperatures are expected to climb to just above the freezing mark.

Roads and walkways may become icy and slippery. Prolonged utility outages are possible. Significant damage to property, including some buildings and trees, is possible due to the weight of ice.

A significant weather event is declared when weather conditions are forecasted or occurring that may pose a risk to the safety of road users and make it difficult for the Township to meet the Minimum Maintenance Standards Regulation Ont. 239/02 for municipal roads, sidewalks, and parking areas.

During a this Significant Weather Event:

  • Township Public Works crews continue to work to maintain municipal roads and sidewalks as conditions allow;
  • Maintenance timelines may be extended due to the severity and duration of the weather; and
  • Residents are reminded to exercise extra caution when travelling, walking, or parking on municipal roads and sidewalks.

The declaration does not mean that municipal services have stopped, but rather that the Township is formally notifying the public that maintenance may take longer than usual due to weather conditions beyond normal operational control.

The Significant Weather Event will remain in effect until conditions improve and the Township is satisfied that it can reasonably meet the Minimum Maintenance Standards. A notice will be issued when the event has ended.

Residents are encouraged to:

  • Avoid unnecessary travel during severe conditions;
  • Adjust driving to suit road conditions;
  • Keep clear of snowplows and maintenance equipment; and
  • Monitor Township communications for updates.
