The Tech Museum - VISIT

The Living Sea
  A Breathtaking Underwater Adventure

The Living Sea celebrates the world ocean – its beauty, diversity and importance to life on earth. Filmed in locations around the world, The Living Sea explores our relationship with this complex, fragile living environment. The film features songs and music by Sting and narration by Meryl Streep.

The Living Sea takes audiences on a journey of discovery to learn how the world oceans are linked by currents, tides, and water cycles. Audiences feel the power of the ocean as they surf thundering waves in Hawaii and ride in a Coast Guard Rescue boat with cadets training to save lives at Cape Disappointment, home to some of the roughest surf in the world.

Audiences follow a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) from the Monterey Bay Research Institute3,000 feet down in the Monterey Bay Canyon to view siphonophores (one as long as a football field) which live where sunlight never penetrates. Come face to face with humpback whales off the coast of Maine, life-size on the IMAX® screen. Swim among thousands of golden jellyfish and witness the bizarre spawning behavior of giant clams among the islands of Palau. Viewers see sailboats scurrying through the San Francisco Bay and are charmed by a sea otter at the Monterey Bay Aquarium.

"The Living Sea features the unique combination of the natural beauty of the ocean and its inhabitants and the technology we are using to explore and protect them,"
– Peter Giles, President and CEO of The Tech.

Museum visitors can further explore the technologies of The Living Sea throughout The Tech's four permanent exhibit galleries. In the Exploration Gallery, visitors can use the same ROV technology shown in The Living Sea to explore an underwater world. Visitors can listen and learn how whales "talk" to one another in the Communication Gallery. In the Innovation Gallery, visitors will discover how surfboards are locally made with high technology. The Life Tech Gallery will feature modern diving suits and explore the materials that make them.
