Drinking water test results indicate that the sodium levels in our drinking water (approximately 24.5 mg/l) are slightly above the provincial standard. The water remains safe to drink for the general population. However, people with sodium restricted diets or high blood pressure may wish to consult their physician. To prevent a tragic fire in the Township of Stirling-Rawdon, Fire Chief Rick Caddick is reminding residents that “every home is required by law to have a working smoke alarm on every storey and outside all sleeping areas.”
Smoke alarms should be tested once a month and batteries should be replaced every year. Replace smoke alarms with new ones if they are more than 10 years old.
Fire Chief Caddick says “it’s just as important that everyone in your home also knows exactly what to do BEFORE a fire occurs.”
Simple steps for home fire escape planning include:
- Determining who will be responsible for helping young children, older adults and anyone else requiring assistance to escape
- Making sure everyone knows TWO ways out of your home
- Checking that all exits are clear and easy to access
- Designating a meeting place outside the house where everyone can meet
- Calling the fire department from outside the house either from a cell phone or a neighbour’s house
- ONCE OUT, STAY OUT
- Practicing your home fire escape plan with everyone in your household
For people who live in apartment buildings and need assistance to escape:
- Make sure you tell the superintendent or landlord you require assistance
- Make sure your name is added to the “persons who require assistance” list in fire safety plan so the fire department knows which apartment you are in
- Know the emergency procedures outlined in the building’s fire safety plan
Most importantly for all fire escape plans ,WHEN YOU HEAR THE ALARM YOU MUST GET OUT IMMEDIATELY.
